California continues to be a hotbed for hip-hop talent. In 2000, at just 9 years old, Inglewood, California. Producer Champ got his start in hip-hop, writing music for his church under the tutelage of his cousin. By the time he was 13, he was rapping in church, then chose his own path at 14, pivoting away from religious music. Dropping songs at just 15 years old Champ to making a name for himself locally over the years. This all culminated in 2019 when he dropped "On My Grind," an ode to one of the toughest experiences he's faced yet. The song, a showcase of Champs melody-driven keys, every instrument played sends goosebumps to listeners.
"On My Grind" is something of a somber audio diary on which Champ recaps the emotions he felt while surviving a shooting in his hometown. The incident, which resulted in three people being shot, took the lives of some of his friends. The song took off in California, but his specific experience resonated elsewhere.
